The golf course that hosts the John Deere Classic got a jump on the tournament season earlier today.  For the second straight year, TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. is hosting the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships.  The course will host the event again next year.

The 59th annual NAIA tournament consists of 156 players and 29 schools, including the host school, St. Ambrose, which is located in Davenport, Iowa, just across the Mississippi River.  Oklahoma Christian is the defending team champion.

“The course came out of the winter in good shape,” said TPC Deere Run golf course superintendent Paul Grogan. “We had a warm spell in April that got us going.  It’s cooled off a little this month but the course is playing good.”

The players will play 18 holes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after which the field will be cut to 17 teams and an the top 40 individuals (including ties) for the final round on Friday.

Grogan is well aware the lads are going to give his driving range a work out this week.

“These kids love to beat balls!”  he said.
